Daniel Roberts

Daniel Roberts – Engineering Lead

Mission: Aurora

Age: 33

Nationality: Australian

Overview:  Daniel Roberts serves as the Engineering Lead aboard Aurora, responsible for the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of the spacecraft’s core systems. Known for his practical approach and exceptional problem-solving ability, Daniel plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability of the systems that sustain the crew throughout the mission.

Background: Daniel grew up in rural New South Wales, where a hands-on upbringing fostered an early interest in mechanical systems and engineering. From a young age, he demonstrated a natural aptitude for building and repairing complex machinery, often working with limited resources to create functional solutions. He attended high school alongside future Aurora commander Ethan Jones, forming a close friendship that would evolve into a lifelong partnership. The two spent years experimenting, building, and refining mechanical systems together, developing a shared understanding of engineering principles that would later prove foundational to the Aurora program.

Education & Experience: Rather than following a purely academic path, Daniel developed his expertise through a combination of formal engineering training and extensive practical experience. His career has been defined by hands-on work, system testing, and real-world problem solving. Daniel has contributed to the development of multiple advanced engineering systems, particularly in propulsion, power distribution, and structural integrity. His ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve complex technical issues has made him a key figure in high-performance engineering environments.

Role on Aurora: As Engineering Lead, Daniel is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all major ship systems, managing power distribution and propulsion support systems, diagnosing and resolving technical faults in real time, and overseeing system optimisation and performance improvements. His role is critical to mission success, as the spacecraft must operate independently for extended periods without external support.

Skills & Specialisations: Advanced systems engineering, fault diagnosis and rapid problem solving, propulsion and power systems, structural and mechanical systems, and systems integration and optimisation. Daniel is particularly known for his ability to approach problems from unconventional angles, often identifying solutions others overlook.

Personality: Daniel’s approach is informal but highly effective. He is not driven by procedure or presentation, but by results. While less outwardly polished than some of his crewmates, he earns trust through competence and consistency. He works best in high-pressure environments, where his focus and analytical thinking allow him to remain calm and decisive. His communication style is direct, often paired with a dry sense of humour.

Notable Relationship: Ethan Jones – Commander Daniel and Ethan share a lifelong friendship, having grown up together and collaborated on engineering projects from an early age. Their relationship is built on mutual trust and a deep understanding of each other’s strengths.

Summary: Daniel Roberts is the engineer behind the systems that keep Aurora operational. In an environment where failure is not an option, his practical expertise and problem-solving ability make him one of the most critical members of the crew.
